Systems/Enterprise:

SGI'S VISUAL AREA NETWORKING SOLUTION ADDS PUNCH TO THE GRID

Visual Area Networking, SGI's anytime, anywhere, any-device visualization solution that is revolutionizing the way business is conducted, takes center stage at SGI's booth at the Society of Exploration Geophysicists meeting.

The theme across a wide spectrum of dynamic demonstrations and talks is real-time, interactive, collaborative analysis of enormous amounts of seismic information from any client device, anywhere on a network. End users on different continents can work together by grabbing and manipulating visual results to analyze terabyte-sized data sets without waiting days to copy the data to each location.

"Visualization in stereo theater settings, or SGI Reality Center facilities, has long been a staple in the exploration phase of the oil and gas business," explains SGI's Bill Bartling, director, Global Energy Solutions. "Now Visual Area Networking leapfrogs over earlier technology barriers to transform the industry's already business-proven visualization infrastructure into international collaborative decision-making hubs for geographically distributed team members who are involved in every phase of the energy enterprise. Remote monitoring and control of robotically driven fields and any number of other high-ROI scenarios that could have only been imagined just months ago can become today's reality with this collaboration breakthrough."

To illustrate the extraordinary benefits of Visual Area Networking technology, SGI is teaming with key industrial partners to demonstrate advanced applications, showcased throughout each day.

The BP Center for Visualization, at the University of Colorado is demonstrating the Immersive Drilling Planner application on a dual-head display connected to a Silicon Graphics Octane2 workstation. This application integrates geological, geophysical, reservoir and existing well data with interactive drilling and platform planning in a 3D visualization environment. The center, which is powered by SGI Onyx family graphics supercomputers, is a leading research center for the use of immersive 3D visualization.

As part of its strategic alliance with SGI for high-end Visual Area Networking solutions, TeraBurst Networks, will demonstrate its Wide Area Visualization Solution (WAVS) for global collaboration between visualization centers powered by SGI equipment. Using a fiber connection between SGI's booth and the University of Colorado's BP Center for Visualization booth, an industry-first solution for high-end video (both mono and stereo) and real-time interactive capability (audio and remote keyboard/mouse) will be showcased.

Rock Solid Images, is demonstrating to SEG attendees the ability of a Visual Area Network to handle large data sets. Rock Solid uses advanced petrophysical and seismic modeling tools to learn if the seismic tool in question is sensitive to the rock and fluid changes they are trying to detect. Once determined, a calibration data set can be constructed to extract this response from the seismic data volumes.

The Society of Exploration Geophysicists International Exposition and Annual Meeting, held this year in Salt Lake City's Salt Palace Convention Center, has evolved into a premier showcase for cutting-edge, energy-related technology. More than 250 exhibiting companies and 9,000 professionals from around the world have converged on Salt Lake City to participate in the variety of industry-related activities offered throughout the week.
